This is a handmade Chinese lacquer painting, finished in rhino skin lacquer (Xipi, 犀皮漆) over an ebony panel, by HFDlacquerware (禾丰鼎). At 7.1" × 7.1" (18 × 18 cm), it is the largest size in our Yi Series lacquer paintings, with enough presence to anchor a wall on its own or lead a larger grouping.
Layer after layer of colored natural lacquer is applied by hand, each one left to cure before the next. The surface is then ground down and polished until the buried colors rise to the top as a mottled, flowing pattern. Because the pattern forms inside the layers, no two pieces are ever the same.
Hang one on its own, or mix several colors and sizes together. Turned on point, four pieces form a striking diamond. The 18 cm pieces pair well with our 12 cm and 15 cm lacquer paintings for a gallery wall that grows over time.
