This is a handmade Chinese lacquer painting, finished in rhino skin lacquer (Xipi, 犀皮漆) over an ebony panel, by HFDlacquerware (禾丰鼎). At 4.7" × 4.7" (12 × 12 cm), it is the smallest size in our Yi Series lacquer paintings, sized for a bookshelf, a desk, or a small wall grouping.
Layer after layer of colored natural lacquer is applied by hand, each one left to cure before the next. The surface is then ground down and polished until the buried colors rise to the top as a mottled, flowing pattern. Because the pattern forms inside the layers, no two pieces are ever the same.
Hang one on its own, or mix several colors and sizes together. The 12 cm pieces pair well with our 15 cm and 18 cm lacquer paintings for a gallery wall that grows over time.
