This is a handmade Chinese lacquer painting, finished in rhino skin lacquer (Xipi, 犀皮漆) over an ebony panel, by HFDlacquerware (禾丰鼎). At 5.9" × 5.9" (15 × 15 cm), it is the middle size in our Yi Series lacquer paintings, large enough to stand on its own on a shelf or wall, and easy to group with others.
Layer after layer of colored natural lacquer is applied by hand, each one left to cure before the next. The surface is then ground down and polished until the buried colors rise to the top as a mottled, flowing pattern. Because the pattern forms inside the layers, no two pieces are ever the same.
Hang one on its own, or mix several colors and sizes together. The 15 cm pieces pair well with our 12 cm and 18 cm lacquer paintings for a gallery wall that grows over time.
