This is a handmade Chinese lacquer pedestal incense box, finished throughout in glossy red with shimmering gold flecks across a textured rhino skin lacquer (Xipi, 犀皮漆) band, from the Chong Series by HFDlacquerware (禾丰鼎). At 3.9" across and 2.8" tall, it holds coil incense, and the lid keeps ash contained between uses. It also works as a jewelry box or a standalone decorative object. In the Chong Series (high relief), the groundwork is built up high before the lacquer goes on, so the pattern rises and falls like terraced fields. Each Chong Series piece takes two to three years to make. The pattern is formed entirely by hand, so no two burners are alike. Red is the color of warmth and welcome in a Chinese home.
