This is a handmade Chinese lacquer pedestal incense box, with a black-and-gold rhino skin lacquer (Xipi, 犀皮漆) band and a lid, interior, and base in solid black lacquer, from the Chong Series by HFDlacquerware (禾丰鼎). At 3.9" across and 2.8" tall, it holds coil incense, and the lid keeps ash contained between uses. It also works as a jewelry box or a standalone decorative object. In the Chong Series (high relief), the groundwork is built up high before the lacquer goes on, so the pattern rises and falls like terraced fields. Each Chong Series piece takes two to three years to make. The pattern is formed entirely by hand, so no two burners are alike. Plain black above and below, and all the movement gathered in one band at the middle, like a horizon at dusk. Lift the lid, light the coil, and the quiet frame does the rest.
