This is a handmade Chinese lacquer Dala horse, finished in flowing gold lacquer (Liu Jin, 流金) in a Light Rain pattern, by HFDlacquerware (禾丰鼎). It reinterprets the iconic Swedish Dala horse (Dalahäst) through traditional Chinese lacquer craft: clean, minimal contours on a wood composite body, with fine, scattered drops of gold across the surface.
The wood composite body is more stable than solid wood, so it won't crack or warp, giving the lacquer a steady base to last. Over it goes natural raw lacquer (生漆), built up through cycle after cycle of hand layering, slow natural curing, and fine charcoal sanding. The gold-toned specks, made with mineral powder, seem suspended beneath a deep, glassy finish, and because each layer settles in its own way, no two horses show the same rainfall.
In Sweden the Dala horse stands for luck and welcome, which makes this an easy gift to give and a quiet accent for a desk, shelf, or collection.
Where the Storm pattern pours, this one drifts: a light rain that falls without hurry, drop by drop, each one finding its own place. It is the calmer of the pair, a horse standing still in the rain, in no rush to be anywhere else.
