This is a handmade Chinese lacquer Dala horse, finished in flowing gold lacquer (Liu Jin, 流金) in a Storm pattern, by HFDlacquerware (禾丰鼎). Small enough for a shelf or desk, it carries more weight than its size suggests: the gold doesn't scatter in dots, it runs the length of the body in dense, continuous sweeps, the way summer rain comes down hard rather than drifting in.
Each stroke of gold-toned lacquer, made with mineral powder mixed into natural raw lacquer (生漆), is laid down by hand and left to dry on its own, so no two horses carry the same rainfall. Denser in some places, thinner in others, the gold rises and falls with the horse's form, as if it breathes with it. It makes a bold gift for someone who wants a piece with real presence, not just something to fill space.
Stroke after stroke, laid down fast, it looks almost hurried — and yet every line, overlapping or standing alone, has found exactly where it belongs. Less a decorative object than a warhorse just back from battle, still carrying its own heat.
