This is a handmade Chinese lacquer plate, finished in richly textured red-and-gold rhino skin lacquer (Xipi, 犀皮漆), from the Chong Series by HFDlacquerware (禾丰鼎). At 5.1" (13 cm) across, it is sized for tea snacks, a few sweets, or small keepsakes, and makes a striking display piece on its own. In the Chong Series (high relief), the groundwork is built up high before the lacquer goes on, so the pattern rises and falls like terraced fields. Each Chong Series piece takes two to three years to make. The pattern is formed entirely by hand and brought out through meticulous polishing, so no two plates are alike.
