This is a handmade Chinese lacquer pen holder, finished in red-and-gold rhino skin lacquer (Xipi, 犀皮漆) with a whisper of blue beneath, on a solid Burma padauk (缅甸花梨) body, from the Yi Series by HFDlacquerware (禾丰鼎). Round and compact, 4.3" tall and 3.5" wide, it holds pens and brushes on a writing desk and suits daily use as well as display. In the Yi Series (low relief), the groundwork is built low, so the colors move together as flow rather than dramatic relief. The pattern is built mound by mound, then polished into view, so no two pieces are alike. Red and gold on the surface, a trace of blue underneath — the kind of detail you only notice after living with it a while.
