This is a handmade Chinese lacquer pedestal incense box on a solid ebony body, with a black-and-gold rhino skin lacquer (Xipi, 犀皮漆) lid, a vivid red lacquer exterior, and a solid black interior, from the Yi Series by HFDlacquerware (禾丰鼎). At 3.9" across and 2.8" tall, it stores incense coils, small jewelry, or keepsakes, and doubles as a decorative accent. In the Yi Series (low relief), the groundwork is built low, so the colors move together as flow rather than dramatic relief. It takes more than a year to make by hand, and the pattern forms on its own, so no two boxes are alike. A textured lid over a smooth red body: one surface asks to be touched, the other simply glows. Also in the Yi Series: see the Round Incense Boxes.
