This is a handmade Chinese lacquer mug, carved from a single block of solid wood, handle included, and finished in rhino skin lacquer (Xipi, 犀皮漆) from the Yi Series by HFDlacquerware (禾丰鼎). It holds 8 fl oz (about 240 ml) of coffee or tea and comes in several colors. With no glue and no joints, it is made to be used every day. In the Yi Series (low relief), the groundwork is built low, so the colors move together as flow rather than dramatic relief. Natural raw lacquer (生漆) and mineral pigments are built up by hand over 10 to 18 months, then polished until river-like patterns surface, so no two mugs are alike. Solid wood and thick lacquer buffer the heat: a hot drink stays hot while the mug stays warm, never scalding, in your hands. Raw lacquer responds to touch. Over months of use, the surface grows smoother and deeper, a patina the Chinese call baojiang (包浆). The mug you use most will end up looking the most like yours. |
