This is a handmade Chinese lacquer vase, finished in black, red, and gold rhino skin lacquer (Xipi, 犀皮漆) with touches of green, over a solid wood body, from the Yi Series by HFDlacquerware (禾丰鼎). Standing 15" tall with a slender long neck, it makes a striking centerpiece for a console table, mantel, or display shelf, equally at home in a minimalist modern interior or a space devoted to traditional Chinese craft.

It takes more than a year to make. Dozens of layers of natural raw lacquer (生漆) are applied by hand, each left to cure naturally for days before the next goes on. The vase is then ground and polished until the mottled rhino skin pattern surfaces, catching the light differently from every angle. The pattern comes from the process itself, so no two vases are alike, and the time it holds is part of what you are buying: a piece built to last generations.

A long neck asks for restraint. One dried stem, or nothing at all, is enough. Most of what this vase has to say is already on its surface: a year of layers, ground back until the colors underneath were ready to be seen.
