This is a handmade Chinese lacquer incense burner for stick incense, finished in red and black rhino skin lacquer (Xipi, 犀皮漆) on a solid ebony body, from the Yi Series by HFDlacquerware (禾丰鼎). It measures 9.4" long and 1.6" wide. Lay the stick along the grooved top and the ash falls onto the burner, not the table. The dense ebony body sits steady on a tea table, altar, or desk without sliding or tipping. In the Yi Series (low relief), the groundwork is built low, so the colors move together as flow rather than dramatic relief. Layer upon layer of natural raw lacquer (生漆) is applied by hand, then ground back until the pattern surfaces. Where the sanding cuts through, the colors open into flowing rings and flecks, so no two burners come out alike. It makes a considered gift for someone who keeps a tea table, a meditation corner, or a study. Yi (夷) means level, at ease — the calm that comes once something rough has been smoothed over. Light a stick, lay it down, and let the thin line of smoke do the same for your afternoon.
