These are handmade Chinese lacquer chopsticks, finished in black-and-gold rhino skin lacquer (Xipi, 犀皮漆) along the upper body, from the Chong Series by HFDlacquerware (禾丰鼎). At 9.8" (25 cm) long, they have matte-finished tips for a secure, comfortable hold while eating. In the Chong Series (high relief), the groundwork is built up high before the lacquer goes on, so the pattern rises and falls like terraced fields. Each Chong Series piece takes two to three years to make. The pattern is formed entirely by hand, so no two pairs are alike. They make a lasting gift for someone who would rather use a work of art every day than keep it behind glass. Two slim sticks, two to three years of work. Every meal eaten with them carries a little of that patience to the table. Also available: see the Rhino Skin Chopsticks in 10 colors, Yi Series. |
