This is a handmade Chinese lacquer box in the traditional tiandigai (天地盖, "heaven and earth") form, finished all over in flowing gold lacquer (Liu Jin, 流金) on a solid ebony body, by HFDlacquerware (禾丰鼎). The lid telescopes down over the base for a close, snug fit, and the interior is lined in smooth, solid black lacquer — a quiet contrast to the gold outside. It holds fine jewelry, seals, incense accessories, or small heirlooms on a scholar's desk or dressing table.
It takes months to make: patient layering of natural raw lacquer (生漆), application of gold-toned mineral powder, slow natural curing, and fine water-sanding, again and again. The gold settles into its own pattern, like molten metal caught in quiet motion, so no two boxes are ever the same. It makes a meaningful gift, and a piece meant to be handed down.
On its companion piece, the gold lid and black base hold sky and earth apart. Here there is no line between them: gold above, gold below, and the black kept inside, for whatever you choose to keep there.
