This gourd rhino skin lacquer craft piece is built on a natural double-gourd (calabash) body, finished using the Yi Series style of traditional Xipi ("rhino skin") lacquer. Dozens of layers of raw natural lacquer in rich red, amber, and gold tones are hand-applied and built up, then ground and polished to reveal a richly mottled, textured surface unique to this piece.
 
The gourd's natural curved silhouette, topped with its own slender curling stem, gives this decorative object an organic, sculptural presence unlike a turned wood or ceramic form.
